Fencing

Print this page

Fencing is the art of combat with a bladed weapon. It requires concentration, strength and willpower. No longer just a means of self-defence, fencing has become a competitive discipline. Fencing as we know it today had its origins in Spain, where a lightweight sword called a "colochemarde" was first used. In 1896, it featured among the disciplines of the first Olympic Games of the modern era, held in Athens. The Swiss Fencing Federation was founded in 1914. There are currently 2,500 licensed fencers in Switzerland.
